4-15-2010 UPDATE!!

I’ve recovered from my mammary tumor surgery and I’m ready for my new home. I’m very happy and very loving. If anyone looks at me, my whole back end just wiggles and wags with happiness. Everyone makes me happy. I’m also quiet and well behaved, so foster mom takes me to work with her where I get to at her desk all day. People come over to pet me and I get soooo excited!! I’m known for my cute little wiggle butt at the office. I even out-wiggle all of the other Cockers at my foster home. My favorite activity is to tote tennis balls around the house. Ya just never know when a human will need to throw one for you!

I also like to carry stuffed animals to my bed and guard them like they were my puppies. Foster mom told me I didn’t have to guard anything anymore. I used to guard my space, but I’ve learned to be friendly with the other dogs and I’m even learning how to doggie play. I love running errands or anything else that involves a car ride. I like to sit in my doggie bed while riding. It snowed this winter and boy was that fun! I was chubby back then but that didn’t stop me. I jumped through the deep North Carolina snow. Boy isn’t that an oxymoron! I could have walked on the cleared sidewalk like the other Cockers, but the snow was more fun. I’ve been forced to watch my food portions so I have lost a few pounds. I don’t like it, but I do feel a lot better, so I guess it’s okay...hmmm. I need to lose about 2 more pounds. I am a smaller Cocker and cute as can be.

I will not get on the furniture unless I am invited-foster mom is not sure who taught me this. I’m very polite and will stare at my foster mom when I want to snuggle. If she tells me ok, I will jump up and claim my spot. I love sleeping next to my foster mom and I can sleep the entire night without moving. I’ve learned how to give kisses too. I am house trained and I know “sit”. Foster mom thinks I’m smart and I can learn more tricks, but it’s difficult to learn with 5 other Cockers interrupting with their less than mature manners! Despite my past, I think people are the best. I just love my new life and I can’t wait to find a forever home where I’ll be inside and part of a real family.

END UPDATE!!

Pepper is a very nice girl who has been given up a few times to the same shelter and finally got into rescue so she can finally find a real forever home. CSAC’s vet thinks that Pepper was adopted from the local shelter (which does not require spaying, by the way) and used for breeding of "designer dog" mixes. Sadly - she is seeing this more and more. Pepper came to us with a mammary tumor and cataracts. She currently can see reasonably well, but we will get her assessed to see her overall prognosis and if she is a candidate for surgery.

Pepper gets along well with other dogs, cats and all people, seemingly including little ones - although she has not been tested with young kids. She’s a happy, nosy girl who’s little nub of a tail does not stop wagging. She can get a little excited to get treats, so we’re working on a more gentle treat taking experience for her - treats - not fingers. Pepper has also not missed too many meals. She’s a smaller girl and could stand to lose a few pounds - but once she gets into a real home and can have some time on walks or in the yard, she will regain her girlish figure and will likely be about 21 pounds.

She’s a beautiful black and tan cocker with some silver on her tan points (legs, and under her tail) and she has wondefully expressive tan eyebrows. Once she gets a proper haircut and some good nutrition, her coat will be strikingly jet black and set off with the tan points. As you can see from one of her pictures - she’ll have lots of movement to her coat.

Pepper will be ready to go soon and would make a wonderful addition to almost any family. We are working to assess her housebreaking skills and will update as soon as she’s settled into a foster home.

For more information about Pepper, email our Adoption Coordinator.

Our adoption process starts with an application. If you are interested in adopting this dog, please fill out this application.

The medical and custodial care of the many Cockers in our care is tremendous. More and more dogs are abandoned with urgent and serious medical issues. We are committed to providing the best possible care for these forgotten friends. Unfortunately, the mounting high costs are beginning to limit the number of dogs we are able to take into our program. Even if you cannot adopt or foster one of our current adoptable dogs, please consider making a donation. The Cocker Spaniel Adoption Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization and your donations are entirely tax deductible.
